Diet Helped My Child's Autism

After trying many different and unsuccessful treatments for my daughter's autism, in the end I discovered that a drastic change in diet helped my child's autism and autistic symptoms to lesson considerably. Autism is a brain disorder that begins in early childhood affecting communication skills, social interaction, creativity and imagination and behavior in negative or abnormal ways. Autistic traits in children persist into and throughout adulthood with varying degrees of severity. Studies estimate that about 14 out of 10,000 children are affected with autism.

Traditional treatments for children with autism include Ritalin, a stimulant normally prescribed to children with ADHD; antidepressants; Applied Behavior Analysis ( ABA , which involves changing the child's behavior); and vitamin B6 with magnesium as a supplement. I tried many of these methods for my daughter, but only diet helped my child's autism. Many health-care practitioners and parents of autistic children have been looking into alternative remedies, including diet, in recent years, which has led to the development of The Gluten-Free/Casein-Free (GFCF) Diet. This diet called helped my child's autism and has positively impacted thousands of families dealing with autism. But one might wonder how this type of diet helped my child's autism—or how it works with autism in general.

Studies point to evident that gluten and casein—proteins basically found in wheat and milk products—are not properly or completely broken down in children with autism. Continued and regular consumption of these foods can exacerbate autistic symptoms and prevent treatment. Many autistic children who follow a GFCF diet show great improvement and positive results, and there is no doubt this diet helped my child's autism.

Of course, it hasn't been easy to remove all the gluten and casein products in our household, to find and eat suitable replacements and to stick to the diet change. However, families who struggle with autism understand that almost anything that might help is worth the very small price to pay. If diet helped my child's autism, I'm sure it can do the same for yours!
